PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Well, this is my last president’s message.

I had planned to serve for one year and then it was two and suddenly three.

It has been a rewarding experience and I would do it again…but I had lots of help with a terrific executive and members who were always willing to take part in our activities and help when needed. The elected members & committee chairs all did a super job but I must specifically thank Darilyn Hill who has been my right hand as secretary and Carolyn Beers for her keen input and my wife Carol who has been a sounding board for many activities.

The PERFECT CIRCLE is a wonderful organization. Lifelong friendships are made there.

We look forward to seeing you on the trails.

Jack & Carol

EDITOR’S MESSAGE

Here it is, May 2005.  I find it hard to believe that I have been doing the Newsletter for 3 years, and what fun it has been!  When I began as Editor, I wondered how I would do the first newsletter, what I would put in it (boy, that problem was sure solved in a hurry for me), what format I would use, etc., etc.   I particularly appreciated all the items of interest, the little stories and jokes, recipes and hints that have been passed on to me to use in publications.  So many, in fact, that I could not include them all.  I have had the enjoyment and satisfaction of doing this job, which was a challenge at the beginning.

But now I feel it is time to hand over the job of Newsletter Editor to another member of Perfect Circle.  It is time for me to step aside and give somebody else the opportunity to be Editor of the Perfect Circle Traveller.  It is time for some fresh ideas, and I know there are many in our membership who could do justice to this position.   This will be my last publication as Editor of your Newsletter.  I have enjoyed working with the Executive and Committee Members to give you a Newsletter that I hope was interesting, informative and fun.  I thank all of you who contributed to your Newsletter, and in closing, I thank my husband, Don, who helped so willingly with every publication, to get the envelopes stuffed, sealed and stamped for mailing.  And we both send along our wishes for many years of safe, fun RV‘ing in your future.

NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Sometimes things just don’t work out as planned – this happened to us recently when Leah came down with food poisoning in mid March, and we had to cancel out on plans to attend the FMCA Winter International Rally at Perry, Georgia. Obviously our focus quickly shifted to Leah’s recovery, and I am pleased to report that she is now well on her way.

From all reports Perry was an excellent rally with especially good entertainment, and a total coach count of 6,467. High fuel costs can’t stop members from enjoying the benefits of motorhoming and FMCA!

With taxes done and yard work well in hand, Leah and I now look forward to our summer rallies, and to seeing many of you again.

National News

National Officers and staff are obviously busy preparing for the summer International Convention that is being held at Minot, North Dakota, August 15 to 18. The Governing Board will be electing people to fill some of the offices that are up for elections. Also they will consider some ‘housekeeping’ type changes to FMCA Bylaws.

You may have noted in the FMCA magazine that some reward programs for recruiting new members have been continued. A free copy of FMCA North American Road Atlas & Travel Guide is yours for the first new member you recruit in 2005. After that you receive a $10 FMCA merchandise coupon for each new member. After 5 new members in 2005 you receive a free one-year membership renewal.

Northeast Area News

The Northeast Area Rally will be held in West Springfield, Mass. on July 13-16, 2005. Leah and I will be unable to be there, but if you plan to attend please let me know so that I might help to put you in touch with others who are going. It is always more fun to park together, enjoy some chapter social hours, etc.

Other News

Although only indirectly related to my role as your National Director, one project that I am presently involved with is working with the executive in updating our Chapter’s Operations Manual. This manual has been in use now for over ten years, and is updated periodically. Its purpose is to assist those serving as our Chapter Officers, and Chairs of our Standing Committees, to better understand their respective jobs, and how the Chapter and FMCA operate. It is just a tool to help us function smoothly as a chapter. I periodically make contacts with Northeast Area and National Officers, and it is obvious from some comments that Perfect Circle Chapter is well regarded. The credit goes to you, and others who have gone before. Hey, if we don’t blow our own horn, who is going to do this for us, eh? J

At our Spring Rally there will be elections for some offices, and the new officers may be looking to fill some committee chairs. Don’t be afraid to get involved if your circumstances allow. Previous officers and committee chairs are always ready to lend a hand - it is not too onerous, and can be lots of fun.

Happy and safe travels,

John and Leah Devlin

(She put the electric tea kettle on the hidden burner on her new kitchen stove and turned the burner on and melted the tea kettle)

John Nutter will be celebrating a big 60th birthday June 15.

Olive Lounsbury escaped serious injury recently when working on clearing a building lot. She has lots of bruises and a crushed vertebrae but that doesn't seem to be keeping her down for long.  We wish you a short recovery time, Olive.

We understand that Don Nauss’s company still is having trouble maneuvering out of his driveway.  Maybe a circular driveway would help these people, Don.

Milestone

Jim Hodge, F12, founding member of FMCA, celebrated his 80th birthday April 22, 2005, with some FMCA friends. He reminisced about the time when a group of people were in a circle deciding they should form a motor home club and choosing a name.

Several names were offered and discussed until someone said we are gathered around like a ‘family’ and the name ‘Family Motor Coach Association’ was chosen.

Jim says it felt like family then and still feels like family when members gather together.

He has the first meeting notes and the first FMCA magazine. Raymond Fritz F4 was the first president of FMCA.

Who could have predicted the membership, benefits, education and fellowship that this association has developed during these 42 years?

       Happy  Birthday  Jim

Grandma's Apron

The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven;

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids; And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled it carried out the hulls. In the fall the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER THIS!   "Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.  Her granddaughter's set theirs on the window sill to thaw."

Women on Wheels, The Red Hat Society

Well girls, I have been waiting all winter for us to get back together and enjoy each other’s company. The summer is the time for us to kick up our heels, get all dressed up and enter the world of the un-believable!

June 11/05 …St Martins Rally. We have been invited to attend, as Women On Wheels, to the ladies’ luncheon Ann & Paul have organized at the St Martins Rally. The luncheon will be held in the large building in the campground on Saturday at 12:00.  Ann says, “remember to bring two pocket novels.”  This is a luncheon for all the gals attending the rally and everyone is encouraged to wear your decorated hats, as we did last year.

June 17/05 ….A tour of Old Government House, Woodstock Rd, at Fredericton’s Spring Rally has been arranged for Friday, June 17/05 at 1:15 pm.  All Red Hatters are welcome to come attired in their red and purple regalia.  This is for anyone attending the Spring Rally who are interested in taking the tour, this is not a Red Hat outing, we just want to tag along.  Please come !

On July 16/05 at Louise Forbes & Bill Boyce’s Rally in St Andrews, the Women On Wheels have also been invited by the Rallymasters to take a guided tour of Kingsbrae Gardens in St Andrews by the Sea. The tour begins at 2:00 on Saturday.  Again, this tour is for all Perfect Circle Members but wouldn’t we look awesome in our red and purple outfits in such a beautiful setting?  The cost of the tour is $ 8.50 each.  Should we choose, we could have tea and dessert after the tour but it would be another added cost.  Tea would be nice though.

Thanks Louise for thinking to extend a special invitation to our Red Hat Chapter.  Please let Louise know your intentions…you snooze, you lose!

Well gals, the Duke of York and I took a flying trip to Florida in March for two weeks.  Thought it time we checked up on the group down there.  I must say we were treated “royally” and this is a good time to thank everyone for giving us the grand welcome.

We even managed to organize 16 gals (15 Women on Wheels and a guest) to meet in Mt Dora for lunch.  It was wonderful to be that far from home and manage to have that many gals from our Chapter to break bread together. And that’s what we really had to do, was break bread—no butter, no wine, the wine was too expensive..food late..well almost like a luncheon relay, as we all seemed to eat at different times.  It was certainly more different than I expected but I did the arranging so who could I blame but “me”.  I like to think that the important thing was, that we “Women On Wheels” were all together and were “out to lunch” in Florida.

Stress Management     -   Some interesting observations

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, "how heavy is this glass of water?"  Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter.  It depends on how long you try to hold it."   "If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.  If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.  In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."  He continued,  "And that's the way it is with stress management.  If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on.  As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.  When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden."   "So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow.  Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can."
"Relax; pick them up later after you've rested. Life is short. Enjoy it!"  And then he shared some ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

* Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.

* Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

* Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

* Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.

* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

* Never buy a car you can't push.

* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

* Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

* Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

* The second mouse gets the cheese.

* When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

* Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

* You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.

* Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

* We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have

weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

* A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
